Vaporetto Line 1: the slow way down the Grand Canal
Line 1 is the workhorse of the Venice water bus network: around twenty stops, roughly an hour from Piazzale Roma to the Lido, and the best-value sightseeing in the city if you already hold a travel pass.
Line 1 runs between Piazzale Roma and Lido S.M.E., calling at around twenty stops along the Grand Canal. End to end it takes about an hour, with boats every 10–12 minutes during the day.
It is the route to take when you are not in a hurry. Line 1 stops at almost every landing stage on the Grand Canal, which makes it slow, crowded and — if you sit at the stern — one of the best boat rides in Europe. Residents use it to get home; visitors use it to see the palazzi slide past at walking pace.
If you only need to get from the station to San Marco, Line 2 is faster. If you want the Grand Canal itself, Line 1 is the point.
01 — The route
Where Line 1 actually goes
West to east: from the bus and train gateway to the beach at the Lido.
The route starts at Piazzale Roma, where airport buses and land taxis arrive, then calls at Ferrovia (Santa Lucia railway station). From there it follows the Grand Canal through San Marcuola, San Stae, Ca' d'Oro, Rialto Mercato and Rialto, then continues past San Silvestro, San Tomà, Ca' Rezzonico and Accademia.
After the Giglio stop it leaves the canal at San Marco Vallaresso, rounds the basilica to San Zaccaria, and runs along the waterfront through Arsenale, Giardini and Sant'Elena to Lido S.M.E..

Key stops only. The full run calls at roughly twenty landing stages; the exact list can change with works or seasonal timetables.
02 — Time
How long does Line 1 take?
End to end: about an hour. Station to San Marco: around 40 minutes.
| Segment | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Piazzale Roma → Ferrovia | 5 min | One stop; walkable if you are light. |
| Ferrovia → Rialto | 15–20 min | The busiest stretch. |
| Rialto → San Marco | 15 min | Accademia and Giglio in between. |
| San Marco → Lido | 15 min | Waterfront stops at Arsenale and Giardini. |
| Piazzale Roma → Lido | 55–60 min | The full run, traffic permitting. |
Times are typical, not guaranteed. Crowds, works and canal traffic can add ten minutes; a boat held at a stop can add more.
03 — Line 1 vs Line 2
Which line should you take?
| — | Line 1 | Line 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Stops | Almost every landing on the canal | Fewer stops |
| End to end | About 55–60 minutes | About 35–40 minutes |
| Frequency | Every 10–12 minutes | Every 12–20 minutes |
| Best for | Sightseeing, local stops | Getting to San Marco faster |
| Crowds | Heavy in high season | Heavy but usually less packed |
04 — Practical
Riding Line 1 without the crush
Go early or late. The 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00 boats are full of commuters. An early-morning run is quiet, cool and photographic; an evening run is the best light of the day.
Board at the start. Piazzale Roma and Ferrovia are the first stops, so you are more likely to get a seat — especially at the stern, where the open-air benches are. By Rialto the boat may be standing room only.
Do not take luggage at rush hour. The aisles are narrow and the gangways are shared. One small case is manageable off-peak; two is a water taxi.
Validate before boarding. A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes, transfers included. If you are riding Line 1 for sightseeing and back, a 24-hour pass is usually cheaper than two singles.
05 — FAQ
Line 1 questions
Does Line 1 go to Saint Mark's?
Yes. The closest stops are San Marco Vallaresso and San Zaccaria. Get off at Vallaresso for the square, or at Zaccaria for the basilica and the waterfront.
How long is Line 1 from the station to San Marco?
Around 40 minutes from Ferrovia to San Marco Vallaresso, depending on how many passengers board and how long the boat waits at each stop. Line 2 is faster if you do not need the intermediate stops.
Does Line 1 run at night?
No. Daytime service winds down in the late evening and the N line takes over along the Grand Canal. Check the last departure at your stop if you are out late.
Can I ride Line 1 with a suitcase?
Yes, but avoid the commuter peaks and keep the case between your feet, not in the aisle. With more than one large bag, a water taxi is usually worth the money.
Is Line 1 the best sightseeing route?
For the Grand Canal, yes. It covers the full canal and the waterfront to the Lido for the price of a normal ticket. Sit at the stern and you have an open-air view for the whole run.
